Haarlem – The North Holland police, in collaboration with the port service of the municipality of Haarlem and police officers from the national unit, conducted a check on recreational boating on the Spaarne on Saturday. This included checking for alcohol and substance use, furnishing requirements of boats and technical condition, as well as whether the boats and outboard motors had been stolen.

68 vessels and their skippers were subjected to a check. 9 fines were issued for various violations of the Inland Navigation Police Regulations. Four skippers were also arrested for sailing under the influence, of which 3 times alcohol and 1 time under the influence of drugs. A 45-year-old man from Spaarndam blew 860 ug/l, a 15-year-old boy from Haarlem was caught and he blew 240 ug/l. A report will be drawn up against all.

In addition to enforcement, several preventive advice has also been given.

SAILING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Skippers are not allowed to sail their ship if you are under the influence of alcohol. The alcohol content of your blood may not exceed 0.5 per mille (or 220 ug/l in a breath test), just like in road traffic. This applies to both pleasure boating and commercial shipping. The police then draws up a report and makes it available to the public prosecutor. An overview of fines can be found in the fine base of the Public Prosecution Service. In extreme cases, the navigation license can also be denied.
