Job offer

The Municipality of Tilburg started a number of Digital Twin projects this year. To this end, it uses the ArcGIS platform as a Digital Twin foundation supplemented with a Tygron component to, for example, calculate climate scenarios based on the themes of heat stress, flooding and/or noise. Or to gain a better insight into the underground objects in three dimensions. The overarching idea here is that we are moving from 2D to 3D in our approach.
This 3D approach now comes mainly from the technical corner of objects and assets, but we would like to investigate whether we can bring this into a virtual, augmented or mixed reality, gaming environment such as unreal or unity to another experience. With this we want to investigate the added value for the short term by means of a user story and try it out in a hyperrealistic way.
We also hope to discover what purpose this can offer us in the future for our employees and/or residents.

The municipality of Tilburg uses a lot of data to support its policy. As a transparent government, we want to inform our citizens well about spatial changes in the city. A virtual environment that comes as close to reality as possible is a new communication canvas. We would like to explore this innovative way of communicating together.

What are you going to do?
As an intern for the Digital Twin projects, you support the organization in discovering whether a gaming (e.g. Unity/Unreal) environment can be of added value in major assignments and/or tasks facing the municipality. We do this from an experimental point of view and would also like to see how other municipalities (such as A’dam and Utrecht) do this.

Tasks:

  • Together with the Digital Twin project group, think of a suitable case around “realistic experience”. Think of, for example:
  • Expand existing 360VR environment with data at eye level;
  • Experimenting with Lidar from street level (via surveying, cyclomedia or your own telephone);
  • Being able to walk around in an environment derived from our data;
  • There is movement and other things are present in this environment (cars, cyclists, pedestrians);
  • Testing new designs;
  • Reviving history/heritage;
  • Audio tour of the city;
  • Have NPCs walk, cycle and drive around town;
  • Light/dark day/night lighting;
  • Nice shaders (simulation lighting?);
  • Sound quiet and/or real real sound;
  • You have to want to walk through the virtual world, that’s because of the graphics;
  • Investigate effectiveness; how can a gaming environment help the municipality and/or its residents – what is that added value?

• Load Kavel10 lidar and mesh data and realize use case(s) in a suitable environment.

Where will you work?
You will work in the Data, Information & Technology department in the Data, Analysis and Research team.
The Data, Analysis and Research team consists of researchers, information analysts, data scientists, knowledge brokers and GIS Specialists. They collect and process data necessary for various policy and development issues. The customers are departments within the municipality but also external partners.
The department consists of approximately 30 to 35 driven and pleasant employees between the ages of 20 and 65. In addition to the colleagues in your team, you mainly work with colleagues from the Digital Twin Platform and Spatial Domain Use Cases projects. This employs motivated, skilled employees from the Spatial Planning, Spatial Implementation & DAO department. Depending on the case we are going to realize, you can also collaborate with other departments.
Within the project you will be guided by a senior GIS specialist and the project leader of the Program, Project and Interim Management department.

Within your position you have the freedom to organize your time and day in consultation, whereby you can work at least 50% at the office (the Stadswinkel) and 50% from home. We are a friendly team that is there for each other. Besides the hard work, there is always time for a joke. Team outings, department drinks or project drinks are of course also accessible to you on one of the terraces behind the City Hall.

“As an intern in the Digital Twin projects, you can expect an engaging and hands-on experience, where you will not only learn the tricks of the trade, but also get the chance to actively contribute to the xxx efforts of the municipality. The DAO department has a friendly atmosphere. You will work together with experienced professionals who are happy to share their knowledge and guide you during your internship at the Municipality of Tilburg. Workshops and training courses are also regularly organized to further develop your skills.” – name –

What are you bringing?
During your internship as a Digital Twin intern, you will be involved in various projects. It is important that you can communicate well with different parties. We are open to improvement and your knowledge and ideas can certainly play a role in this. You analyze and identify opportunities and threats/risks. You are able to look for creative ideas and solutions. You are socially involved and want to contribute to a liveable Tilburg. You are allowed to be critical and we appreciate it when you give your opinion.

In addition:

  • Are you following a higher professional education in Gaming;
  • Are you currently in your 3rd/4th year of study?
  • Do you have an affinity with Digital Twin and Geographic Information Systems;
  • Can you handle Office 365;
  • Are you available between 28 and 36 hours per week, for a period of 6 months;
  • Are you data driven?

What do you get in return?
The Municipality of Tilburg offers an inspiring work environment where diversity is valued and authenticity is stimulated. As part of a leading government organization, you will have the opportunity to contribute not only to Tilburg, but also to your own growth thanks to our extensive range of training courses through the Tilburgs Leerhuis.

We also offer you:

  • An internship with a lot of personal responsibility and freedom within one of the best government organizations in the Netherlands;
  • One permanent supervisor who will be your buddy during your entire internship period;
  • An internship allowance of €500.22 gross per month based on a 36-hour working week;
  • Are you not entitled to student public transport? Your travel expenses will then be fully reimbursed (2nd class).
