A 20-year-old woman from Volendam was killed in an avalanche near the Austrian ski resort of Serfaus yesterday, NH News reports.

The woman was skiing yesterday when she was hit by an avalanche off the slopes. The snow mass, according to reports in Austrian media, would have been about 30 meters wide and 80 meters long. It cannot be ruled out that the woman caused the avalanche herself.

Dozens of people participated in a search, but when the woman’s body was found she was completely buried under two meters of snow. “She could only be recovered,” said a police spokesperson. It is unclear whether the skier had equipment with her to alert emergency services in the event of an avalanche.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms the death of the Dutch. The woman would have lived in Amsterdam before her death, writes NH News.

Earlier this week, a Dutch skier (28) was also killed by an avalanche in Switzerland.
