Wolff speaks of 'one of the worst days in racing' and wants to take 'radical' steps

Toto Wolff speaks of one of the worst days in racing after the Bahrain Grand Prix. The team boss saw that his drivers lacked the speed and were outwitted by both Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin, while Carlos Sainz also finished ahead of both Mercedes drivers. A painful sensation, and so radical changes must be made by the team in order to take steps forward.

In conversation with Sky Sports, the Mercedes team boss speaks of a terrible day. One of the worst days in racing. Just not good at all. We are really short on speed. The drivers had to push, but that really hurt the tyres,” Wolff saw as his team’s problems lie not only in performance, but also in tire management, leaving Lewis Hamilton and George Russell also unable to to find the grip.

For the second year in a row, Mercedes is therefore facing a major backlog, with Red Bull Racing once again being the team at the top of the times list. Painful, since until two years ago the proportions were the other way around. “Red Bull is on a different planet, Aston Martin will come next,” said Wolff, who sees that the British racing stable has also surpassed his team in terms of performance.

Radical changes

It is therefore clear to the Austrian that it must be better. He believes that his team can do it, but says that serious steps must be taken by the team, because the backlog is huge. “We’re a second behind the rest, that’s the standard now and from there we have to work our way forward and I’m sure we can do that. This is a wake up call. It has to be much more radical than hoping for an upgrade of three tenths.’
