Tilburg – Last night, thanks to an alert witness, the police at the Schouwburgring arrested a 32-year-old Romanian man who is suspected of the attempted theft of a catalytic converter from a car.

A witness reported around 03:00 on Thursday, March 23, 2023 that a person was lying under a car on the Schouwburgring who was probably busy stealing the catalytic converter. Two officers arrived on the scene shortly after the report was made. They saw that one man walked away from a parked car brand Renault towards the underpass of the theater. They stopped the man. The officers saw that there was a jack under the Renault, which lifted the vehicle. There was an electric saw with which the catalytic converter had already been cut in half. According to the witness, the officers were with the person who had been under the car. The suspect was subsequently arrested. The detective is conducting a further investigation into possible accomplices.

Precious metal
The theft of catalytic converters is a common problem. This month, eight reports of the theft of these devices were made in Tilburg alone. Almost every car with a combustion engine has a catalytic converter, which ensures that exhaust gases are cleaned in order to make the emissions as clean as possible for the environment.

Thieves are not so much concerned with the catalysts themselves, but with the precious metal that is incorporated into them. This is sold and thus generates money. If the catalytic converter has been stolen from your car, you will hear a huge noise when starting. To make it as difficult as possible for thieves, park your car in a well-lit and busy location. After all, thieves don’t want to be seen. Do you not trust a situation, for example because strangers seem to be reconnoitring cars? Then always call 112 immediately. And if you are unexpectedly a victim of catalytic converter theft, then file a report.
