Marco Bakker was born 85 years ago as Jacobus Marinus Bakker, nickname Jaap. About why he started calling himself Marco as an opera singer, he explains in ‘Troskompas’: “I didn’t think Jaap was a good stage name. I already imagined how that would go when performing abroad. In Italy they would call me Jacob, in France Jacques and in England Jack. Marco is a good international name and I remain true to my two first names: ‘Mar’ from Marinus and ‘Co’ from Jacobus. The biggest proof that the name works is that at a certain point my mother and my sisters only started calling me Marco.”
