'When Slot went to Feyenoord, he wanted me as an assistant. Was no room for'

In the past, FC Groningen coach Dennis van der Ree held the role of video analyst at Feyenoord, but says that his position looked different in practice. Arne Slot saw in him a fully-fledged right hand.

Van der Ree was a video analyst at Feyenoord last season, but if it were up to trainer Slot, he would get a different position. “When Arne went to Feyenoord, he called me. He wanted me to be there as an assistant, but there was no room for that next to Marino Pusic and John de Wolf. He said: The only way it can be done is that I recruit as a video analyst. Then just analyze the opponents, but otherwise you are just on the field as a fully-fledged assistant. That’s how it went in the end,” Van der Ree tells Voetbal International.

Instead of title fever at Feyenoord, Van der Ree is experiencing relegation concerns at Groningen. The coach has confidence in his team, partly thanks to the new acquisitions. “When I look at the steps we are taking as a team, the role that the new players are taking, then I really see a turnaround. That gives me the conviction that we will score enough points. That (Jetro Willems and Elvis Manu, ed. ) are guys who have been through a lot in their careers, they feel the seriousness of the situation. They also bring a winner’s mentality and of course have a lot of qualities. They are a great asset.”
