Good morning! The international biodiversity summit starts in Montreal and Google publishes an annual overview of trending search terms.

The weather: The northwesterly wind direction holds and showers are again on the program. Due to the further cooling of the atmosphere, there is a greater chance of hail or wet snow. At 5 to 7 degrees, it doesn’t stay down for long.

Are you going on the road? Here you will find an overview of the activities. And view the rail timetable here.

What can you expect today?

  • The United Nations Biodiversity Summit begins in the Canadian city of Montreal. Over the next two weeks, representatives of countries from all over the world will meet there to agree on the conservation of global species richness, which is threatened by climate change.
  • Google comes with the Year in Search, the annual overview of trending searches. Year in Search gives a good overview of the events that have occupied people’s minds each year.
  • Two days before the duel with Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, the Dutch national team will complete a private training session. National coach Louis van Gaal prepares his team from 3 p.m. on the field in Doha for the upcoming game.

What did you miss?

In the US state of Georgia, the second and decisive round of the elections for a seat in the Senate has been won by Democrat Raphael Warnock. He defeated Republican Herschel Walker, a former football player supported by former President Trump.

At the beginning of last month, none of the candidates managed to get an absolute majority, so a second round was necessary. It was the only seat left to be vacated after the midterms, the congressional midterm elections, of more than a month ago.

It was already certain that the Democrats would retain their majority in the Senate. Prior to the Georgia result, the Democrats to Republicans had a 50-50 split, but the Vice President — in this case, Democrat Kamala Harris — has the casting vote in those cases.

Still, Warnock’s win is a big boost for the party. At a 50-50 split, the Democrats would have had to get all senators in line for a majority. A single Democrat who threatens to vote with the Republicans could have gained a lot of power as a result.

Other news from the night:

  • Trump company convicted of tax fraud: Former President Trump’s company helped executives evade taxes, is the conclusion after an investigation that took all together three years.

  • Saudi crown prince not prosecuted in US for Khashoggi murder: The court agrees with the Biden government’s reasoning that Salman enjoys immunity because he is prime minister in his country.

  • ‘Almost all victims of refrigerated truck drama were previously in the Netherlands’: The comparison of fingerprints shows that 38 Vietnamese have also been to the Netherlands before their trip to England and have been registered here by the Dutch authorities, reports NPO Radio 1 program Argos.

And then this:

People have less to spend this year, but you won’t notice that much when buying a Christmas tree.

Happy Wednesday!
