“Verstappen does not show that to the outside world, because he does not want to show weakness”

Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen are currently taking record after record in Formula 1. Verstappen himself has regularly indicated that he is not very interested in those kinds of statistics, but in Zandvoort the world champion already admitted that matching the longest winning streak of Sebastian Vettel was very special. According to Helmut Marko, Verstappen was therefore somewhat tense for the race in Italy, to the surprise of former driver Timo Glock.

Glock himself finished on the podium three times in his Formula 1 career as a Toyota driver, before moving to Virgin Racing to fill the field. Nowadays, the 41-year-old German is active as an analyst for the German branch of Sky Sports F1 and after the Italian Grand Prix weekend, Glock looked back on the race in a column. Ten wins in a row. That is of course excellent what Max Verstappen shows here’, realizes Glock. “No one has done this before in the history of the sport.”

Glock goes off on words from Marko

Verstappen had been with Red Bull for five years before he got the chance to fight for the world title. He immediately grabbed the opportunity with both hands. “He has worked his way to the top all by himself. It doesn’t matter what he does: it’s simply great and very impressive. I was surprised that he was still a bit nervous’, says Glock based on Helmut Marko’s words, which were contradicted by Verstappen himself. The Dutchman himself thinks it’s fine that Marko makes these kinds of statements if he likes to say it.

However, Glock relies on the words of the 80-year-old Austrian. ‘I thought those records weren’t that important to him. According to Marko, that is apparently the case, but he (Verstappen, ed.) does not show this to the outside world, because he naturally does not want to show any weakness,’ Glock suspects. “It’s nice to know that there are certain things that can make Verstappen emotional, just like they did in Zandvoort. When he was on stage, it was noticeable that he was hit.’

It’s not just Verstappen who is working on a record series. “Red Bull has taken the ridiculous number of fifteen wins in a row,” Glock continues. “It’s one of the best seasons you can have as a team. That is perfection in a way. They are faultless, there is rarely a point where you see Red Bull making mistakes. They always have the upper hand in terms of strategy. They are very strong there, and it is crazy what they are achieving and how they still manage to motivate the team to deliver flawless work, as we have seen in the last races and seasons. That is amazing.’
