Van der Vaart sees ‘world class’ at Orange: ‘The talent he possesses…’

Rafael van der Vaart argues for a basic place for Xavi Simons with the Dutch national team. The 109-time Oranje-international thinks that the PSV playmaker can grow into an ‘exceptional player’.

Not for the first time, Van der Vaart speaks lyrically about Simons. ‘What we are currently missing in the Netherlands, which mainly has an absolute top defense, is a truly exceptional player. I think Xavi Simons has that potential and can become that player’, he writes in his column for De Telegraaf. ‘Sometimes people laugh a bit when I say that, because he is 19 years old and would not be ready for an important role in the Orange squad yet. But should we keep him on the bench for two years? Right now you have to give him that experience, we will benefit from that later.’

‘I also see a hundred things that could be improved, but I look at potential,’ says Van der Vaart. ‘I see world class with Simons. We haven’t had the talent that he possesses and that will soon surface even more, at the Orange. We must cherish that.’

Memphis Depay
Van der Vaart is happy with the return of Georginio Wijnaldum to the Orange. In Ronald Koeman’s first era with the Orange, the AS Roma midfielder formed a tandem with Memphis Depay. “I’m a huge fan of Depay. If he is in good shape, you have already solved fifty percent of the problems at Orange. But then he has to have the right players around him.’
