Amsterdam – The police have arrested two minor suspects in the investigation into the death of a man who was found in Amsterdam-Noord at the end of August. Bystanders found the man on the NDSM Square with a street tile on his head and very serious head injuries. He died from these injuries a few days later in hospital. The arrested suspects – boys aged 13 and 15 – are associated with more violent incidents in Amsterdam-Noord in recent times.
On the night of Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 August, the police received a report around 3 a.m. of a seriously injured man with a street tile on his head on the NDSM Square. The victim had to be resuscitated on the spot by emergency services and was then urgently taken to hospital. The 42-year-old man from Turkey died there on Friday, September 1. Immediately after the man was found, the police started an investigation into what happened to the victim. A Large-Scale Investigation Team focuses on the case. Detectives quickly tracked down the two young suspects and arrested them both on Monday, September 11. On Thursday, September 14, the boys were brought before the examining magistrate, who remanded them in custody for a period of fourteen days. So they are stuck.
Suspicion of other violent incidents
The investigation also links the arrested suspects to more violent incidents in Amsterdam-Noord in the past period. They were both also arrested for two robberies on the NDSM site and in the immediate vicinity of the site. It is being investigated whether the two can be linked to other street robberies.
In addition, in the investigation into the death of the man on the NDSM-Plein, detectives discovered clues that point to the involvement of the two in the theft of a rainbow flag on the Bongerdkade in Amsterdam-Noord. This flag was set on fire and put in a garbage container. The boys are suspected of insulting a group, theft, vandalism and arson.
