Bergen op Zoom – On Thursday, two men were arrested by the police on suspicion of drug possession. They were both pulled over for a traffic control check. When their papers were checked, the officers smelled a cannabis smell coming from the car.
The first suspect was seen by police officers on the Antwerpsestraatweg in the afternoon. He was driving his car with a passenger when officers wanted to check on him. They signaled the driver to stop. The driver stopped his car at the intersection with Prins Hendrikstraat. Both doors opened and both occupants sprinted off. One man has not been traced. The other, a 23-year-old man from Bergen op Zoom, was arrested after a short pursuit on foot in the Koningin Sophiastraat in Bergen op Zoom.
Due to the fact that the two men ran off, several of the officers’ colleagues joined the search for the suspects. A police unit took a look at the abandoned car and found a bag with a kilo of hemp and two ziplock bags with about 25 grams of hemp. They have been confiscated and will be destroyed. The suspect was arrested and taken to a cell complex. There he made a statement. The man was released on Friday afternoon.
Roosevelt Avenue
The other suspect was arrested on Thursday evening at Rooseveltlaan in Bergen op Zoom. During, again, a check for compliance with the Road Traffic Act, officers smelled a cannabis smell coming from the car. They asked the driver of the car, a 19-year-old young man from Belgium, to extradite all drugs present. He cooperated with the audit.
In the car, the officers found a bag full of cannabis. In total, the bag turned out to contain 1 kilo of hemp. It has been confiscated. This arrested suspect was also transported to a police cell complex for questioning. He made a statement and was sent home on Friday afternoon.
