Two arrests after serious assault on truck driver

Ritthem – A 64-year-old Bulgarian truck driver was seriously assaulted last night in a parking lot at a catering business on Englandweg. He suffered a double leg fracture and was taken to a hospital in Goes. The police, in collaboration with the Royal Military Police, arrested a 28-year-old man from Kerkwijk and a 46-year-old man from Aalst as suspects on site. It appears to be a conflict between truckers themselves.

The police received a report at around 12:35 am on Friday, April 5, 2024, that a man had been assaulted in a parking lot at a coffee house on Englandweg. At the scene, officers found a seriously injured Bulgarian truck driver lying on the ground. He appeared to have been abused.

A witness said that he was sleeping in the cabin and that around midnight two people knocked on the door. He saw that they had taken the fire extinguisher from his truck and sprayed other trucks with it. A windshield was also smashed. A little later he saw a colleague lying injured on the ground. He immediately called 112, after which police and Royal Military Police units arrived on the scene.

Arrests
Two suspects were arrested at the scene who were heavily under the influence of alcohol. The 28-year-old man from Kerkwijk blew 735 ugl, the 46-year-old man from Aalst blew 835 ugl. The reason for the serious assault is not yet clear.
