Former US President Trump expects him to be arrested on Tuesday. He announces this on his own social media network Truth Social. “The by far most popular Republican candidate and former president of the United States of America will be arrested next Tuesday,” he writes in a message with all caps.
Trump is embroiled in multiple legal investigations. The case Trump is now referring to takes place in Manhattan, New York, and revolves around paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, with whom he is said to have had a relationship. Trump says he can conclude from leaked messages that he will be arrested on Tuesday.
In the post, Trump, who is running for president again, first rants about the state the United States is in: “We are now a third world country and dying.” He also reiterates his claim that the presidential election was stolen.
Then it is about the investigation into paying hush money. He calls the Attorney General’s Office in Manhattan corrupt and paid for by progressive businessman George Soros. He expresses the expectation of being arrested, but does not make it clear on what exactly he bases this.
Then he calls for resistance: “Protest and take back the country!” American media see a parallel in this with the storming of the Capitol two years ago.
The Manhattan Public Prosecutor’s Office has been asked for comment by American media, but would not comment.
Stormy Daniels claims to have had sex with Trump in 2006, when his wife Melania had just given birth. In 2016, Trump’s attorney paid Cohen $130,000 out of his own pocket. Trump denies ever dating Daniels.
The lawyer went to prison for three years after admitting to breaking campaign laws by committing fraud on behalf of his boss. Investigators from the Public Prosecution Service then also looked at whether Trump had committed similar violations to pay hush money. They spoke to Daniels and Cohen, among others.
American media previously reported that an arrest was imminent. Justice would consult with the Secret Service, which provides Trump’s security, to ensure that the procedure runs smoothly.
