A train that was shot at with an air rifle near Geldermalsen yesterday was probably accidentally hit. According to the police, a number of minors were shooting at cans and plates near a house nearby.
The train was shot at around 4:30 p.m. on King’s Day. ProRail said it was shocked by the “bizarre incident”. There were no injuries, but the train was damaged, according to Omroep Gelderland. Train traffic was also halted for a short time.
After investigating, the police found a group of minors and an air rifle at a house near the railway. The police had a good conversation with the teenagers and with the adult resident of the house. The teenagers will not be punished, but the resident will soon have to report to the police station.
“You can have an air rifle if you are 18 years or older, but you cannot shoot minors,” a police spokesperson explains. “And because there was damage to the train, we want to investigate the matter properly. However, we do not assume malicious intent.”
