The traffic fines will go up even further, writes Finance Minister Kaag in the Spring Memorandum. To cut more than 2.5 billion euros, all ministries, except Defence, must surrender. Justice and Security must save 190 million euros. ‘The most important elements of the package of measures are the policy increase of fine rates by 10 percent,’ said the minister in the Spring Memorandum presented today.

Due to failed section controls and roadworks, the Ministry of Justice and Security is struggling with disappointing fine receipts. It can also be read that previously not all section controls on motorways could be replaced, but this is now possible due to extra budget.

Without a belt: not 160, but 176 euros

A fine for holding a smartphone while driving is now 380 euros and driving through a red light is 280 euros. Driving without a seat belt results in a fine of 160 euros. So that will add 10 percent to everything. It is not yet clear when the fines will be increased. The new standards may come into effect on January 1.
