A coach caught fire on the A2 motorway between Utrecht and Amsterdam this morning. All passengers were able to get away in time and saw from the other side of the guardrail how the bus completely burned out.
The fire started due to an unknown cause on the hard shoulder of the highway at Nieuwer ter Aa, just north of the Breukelen exit. Rijkswaterstaat decided to temporarily close the A2 in both directions between Breukelen and Vinkeveen.
Traffic in a southerly direction can now continue as usual. Traffic is also possible again in a northerly direction, but not across all lanes: there is still foam on the road there.
Replacement transport has been arranged for the passengers of the coach, reports RTV Utrecht. Salvaging, cleaning and possibly repairing the asphalt will probably take all afternoon.
