Tire wear again a major thorny issue Ferrari: ‘We are eating the tires alive’

Carlos Sainz sees that Ferrari is still struggling with race speed. Charles Leclerc again showed on Saturday that the SF-23 is fast over one lap, but on Sunday the Ferrari team fell through the ice to finish behind Red Bull Racing, Fernando Alonso and Mercedes. Again, tire wear prevented the Scuderia drivers from catching up with the other top teams. The Ferrari car therefore needs upgrades, Sainz knows.

Ferrari had another difficult race after already having a difficult start in Bahrain. Especially on the hards, the drivers dropped far back. “That stint has proven that we are not where we want to be, that we have more wear than Mercedes and more wear than Aston Martin,” Sainz is quoted by Motorsport.com. “We also lack some race pace. Before the weekend and after Friday I thought we could be the second team here.’

“We don’t have the speed we want, the balance is not as desired. We just had a hard time,” the Ferrari driver continues. Again, tire wear is a topic of discussion. Ferrari had hoped for improvement in Jeddah, but according to Sainz there was no sign of that. “If we already overheat the tires in free air, imagine what it’s like if we follow someone. Then we’ll eat the tapes alive. In addition, we need free air to drive somewhat decent lap times.’

Sainz: ‘We need time’

Sainz therefore knows that the Ferrari team needs updates, as the correlation between the wind tunnel and the track is perfect. The Spaniard therefore knows that he must be patient. “The thing is that the car does exactly the same as in the wind tunnel. We know what the weaknesses are here and in the wind tunnel. We know what to develop, but we need time. You can’t have upgrades ready overnight,” concludes the single race winner.
