Threads finally shows the trending topics

Threads did not have many fairly standard social media options at launch, but that is increasingly changing. For example, the option to see the trending topics live will soon be available on Threads. In the United States, people see what is currently trending in that country.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg writes: “We’re running a little test with today’s top topics on Threads in the U.S. We will roll it out in more countries and languages as soon as we get it on track…” It may be a commonly used option within social media, but it is not just a list of: people talk about this a lot. After all, there is always a lot of talk about certain topics and sometimes they are also topics that may not be suitable for everyone. Sometimes there are also overlaps, for example Eurovision: one person will probably call it #eurovision, but another will call it #eurovision2024.

Threads

AI determines the trending topics

AI is used through machine learning to determine the topics of the day. The idea is that the AI knows well which topics are not desirable in the list, but if something comes through that you really find unacceptable, you can also report those trending topics to Threads. The list can be found on the search page and the ‘For You’ feed. It can mean a big boost for the social medium, because it makes it easier and faster to find people who talk about things that you also find interesting.

Threads will soon be part of the fediverse and Meta is busy working on that. It plans to allow you to use different accounts within the app and link them for immediate posting. It showed how that will work in a demo. In any case, it sounds good, because you can post posts that you want to put on multiple social media at the same time, which saves many steps.

Threads in the fediverse

You will find it -once it arrives- under a heading called fediverse sharing. There are some conditions: you must have a profile photo and if you decide to delete a post, it is not guaranteed that the deletion will also arrive in the linked apps. That would not be due to Meta, but to the protocol used to ensure that you can post Threads posts on Mastodon, for example. In any case, good to know: fediverse only works via ActivityPub, so if social media does not use that, you unfortunately cannot post to it.
