This is what the average Dutch person spends on streaming

We love streaming services and ask the average Dutch person if they have a subscription to such a service and there is a good chance that the answer is ‘yes’. But how much do we have to spend per month to watch White Lotus and Drive to Survive?

More than one streaming service

Most Dutch people have more than one streaming service. For many people it all started relatively innocently with a Netflix account, but now there is Videoland, Disney+, SkyShowtime, HBO Max, Prime Video and, for example, Viaplay. So busy, but also a reason for many people to ‘cut the cord’ and renounce their regular television subscription. A television subscription costs an average of 23 to 40 euros per month: what do we actually spend on all those streaming services? This is now known (as far as streaming services that stream films and series are concerned: music streaming is not included).

Stream guide conducted research into what the average Dutch person spends on streaming services and that is quite modest. If you have all the streaming services, you will spend more than 100 euros per month on them, but the average Dutch person has two to three streaming services and spends 27.17 euros per month on all that streaming. The majority of people spend between 10 and 40 euros per month, according to surveys of 1,654 people. 15 percent spend less than 10 euros, while one in twenty Dutch people spend as much as 60 euros per month on streaming services.

Average spending on streaming services

There is a good chance that the average amount we spend on streaming will increase: in the United States people spend an average of 70 euros per month. We don’t see Dutch people reaching that amount very quickly, but especially because the prices of streaming services continue to rise, we certainly expect that the average monthly amount will certainly skyrocket. Although many streaming services increased their prices last year, it is expected that they will continue to rise this year.

In the meantime, Netflix is still busy combating shared accounts, which is why it is expected that more Dutch people will take out their own subscription, which will also increase the monthly amount. Netflix is currently alone in this regard, but HBO Max and Viaplay are also planning to do this. In short, in many ways it is becoming increasingly expensive to subscribe to many streaming service subscriptions.

Prices rise

Fortunately, many subscriptions can be canceled monthly, so you can shop around a bit: if a lot of cool stuff has appeared on Disney+, you take it for a while, and then you cancel it again and go for HBO Max. The higher the prices become, the more likely this will happen. We are curious how high the costs for those streaming services have to rise before people drop out, because in addition to a lot of complaining, it does not yet appear that many streaming viewers will drop out when price increases or, for example, other sharing policies arrive.
