A suspect in a major cannabis case was arrested in the courtroom in Almelo on Monday morning after he was caught secretly filming. When Enschede resident Sandro R. had to hand over his phone to the public prosecutor’s office, he cursed the public prosecutor and the court. He was immediately arrested and the hearing continued without him. That’s what Tubantia writes.
In the hallway in front of the hearing room, a confrontation then broke out between the public prosecutor’s office and several suspects. Phones were passed on to each other and the public prosecutor’s office then demanded that several suspects hand over their mobile phones.
Large-scale cannabis cultivation
The criminal case revolves around an organization that, according to the judiciary, grew cannabis on a large scale at thirteen locations in Enschede and Delden. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the group was formed by the brothers Edo (34) and Sandro R. (28) and their accomplices Bas M. (21) and Joey J. (35). Co-suspects in the case are Kelly S., Dirk J., Pedro R. (a brother of Edo and Sandro) and Joey J’s girlfriend.
Major police action
The cannabis organization was closed down by the police in May 2022 after a huge amount of cracked chat messages that the suspects sent to each other, mainly via EncroChat. The investigation into those messages started in 2020. Six suspects were arrested on May 9, 2022 in a major police operation with 180 officers, during which thirteen buildings in Enschede and Delden were raided. Several cannabis farms, a cannabis drying facility and eleven firearms were found at the locations.
The lawyers of the suspects have submitted various investigation requests to the examining magistrate, but the Public Prosecution Service opposes this. The case will continue on December 4. The court will then make a decision about the defense’s investigation wishes, Tubantia reports.
