In the west of Suriname, the Judicial Intervention Team (JIT) and the Military Police found an illegal airstrip on Saturday. The track was built by cocaine smugglers. According to the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service, illegal flights were regularly carried out. This means that the track has been used to import large quantities of cocaine from countries such as Colombia or Brazil into Suriname.
Aeroplane
The track was built in the Nickerie district. The JIT found a burnt-out single-engine aircraft there. It is not known what happened to the plane.
Camp
The drug smugglers had built a camp next to the track. It turned out to have been set on fire. A mini-excavator and a number of jerry cans of jet fuel were also found next to the runway.
No one has been arrested. An investigation into possible persons involved in the runway is ongoing.
