Students at the Limburg student association MSV Tragos were humiliated during hazing, sources report to NU.nl. The violations are so serious that Maastricht University will immediately withdraw the subsidies and exclude the association from the introduction week in the city for an indefinite period, a spokesperson said.

The university wrote in a statement that there was “completely unacceptable” behavior. Incidents during hazing at Tragos have also been reported in previous years.

According to 1Limburg, the students were pelted with urine between 2 and 5 September. Male candidate members would also have been forced to drink beer with various ingredients, causing them to vomit. They were arranged so that they would puke all over each other. Furthermore, misogynistic and racist behavior would have been displayed.

The university’s statement said Tragos “failed in terms of personal integrity and hygiene.” It is also confirmed that there were racist and discriminatory texts and activities.

1Limburg writes that about 40 of the 175 candidate members dropped out during the hazing. The association says in a response that the board is “devastated”. Eight members have been suspended indefinitely, the regional broadcaster writes. The club’s pub will remain closed until further notice.

The sanctions for Tragos will remain in effect indefinitely. The association is urged to draw up an improvement plan. The university calls on students to continue to report complaints and abuses.
