Statements of support for wider co-reimbursement

With more than nine thousand signatures and a bunch of forget-me-nots, chairman Pim den Boon of De Medicine Student set out today to argue for a generous internship allowance for interns. Den Boon is pleased with the support that The Medical Student has received for this argument.

The medical student would like interns to receive a monthly internship allowance of 400 euros, instead of the current 100 euros in expenses. President Den Boon pleaded for this with the Dutch Association of Hospitals (NVZ) this Tuesday. ‘At the NVZ we were able to explain our arguments for this very well. No commitments have been made, but their negotiators will take our point on board when negotiations for a new hospital collective agreement resume,” says Den Boon.

An NVZ spokesperson says that the NVZ does not want to comment on the request at this time. “We will not make any further announcements about any subjects that touch the negotiating table.”

Participation

The petition that The Medical Student had set up for this purpose has now been signed more than nine thousand times. On various social media channels, people have responded to the call of The Medical Student to post a photo or video with the hashtag #handenopelkaarvoordeco on the action day. Although that number seems a bit more modest than with a comparable campaign four years ago, Den Boon is still satisfied. ‘There are many nice contributions from students, doctors and organisations. It would be nice if even more doctors participate.’ All in all, ‘it shows that there is broad support’, he notes.

Den Boon is still considering requesting an interview at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to explain ‘what it means in practice to do internships’ and why the Ministry should support a generous internship allowance. Pim den Boon explains the action in the MC podcast, which can be listened to here on Thursday.
