State Secretary Van der Burg hopes for BBB support for asylum policy

State Secretary for Justice and Security Eric van der Burg hopes for support from BoerBurgerBeweging when it comes to asylum policy. The BBB is against coercion, and is therefore critical of the forced dispersal of asylum seekers. But according to Van den Burg, the so-called distribution law is actually beneficial for the countryside.

‘The distribution law ensures a balanced distribution across the whole of the Netherlands,’ explains Van der Burg. BBB wants more attention to be paid to the west of the Netherlands when it comes to the reception of refugees. According to him, it would therefore be logical if the party supports the distribution law.

In the Randstad and large cities, the State Secretary sees that they are currently doing less than they should to the reception of refugees. It is mainly the small communities in the east and north of the country that take care of the shelter. ‘If BBB actually thinks that something needs to be done about this, then I expect seventeen votes in favor of the law in the Senate, and one vote in the House of Representatives.’

Role provinces

BBB’s victory in the Provincial Council elections need not be an obstacle to the policy of the current cabinet, expects Van der Burg. ‘We’re just going to look at how we can get majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.’ And when it comes to the reception of refugees, it is mainly the municipalities that have to work on implementing the policy. ‘The provinces only play a presiding and coordinating role in this.’
