Special unit takes more than a ton of cocaine in Surinamese interior (UPDATE)

1,091.5 kilos of cocaine have been seized in the interior of Suriname. Two suspects have been arrested and detained. A mixed unit of members of the Suriname Police Force, the National Army, the Judicial Intervention Team and the National Security Directorate carried out the operation.

Tibitic

The operation was launched on the basis of information received. The catch was made in a remote region on the banks of the Tibiti River, about a hundred kilometers south-west of Paramaribo.

An airplane and an amount of bags with suspected cocaine were found, as well as an automatic assault rifle, the Suriname Police Corps reported.

Port

De West newspaper reports that several suspects have fled. This would concern people who had arrived on site in boats via the river, apparently to dispose of the drugs.

The drugs and the weapon were seized. The Narcotics Brigade is investigating the matter further, with support from the other services.

The last major seizure of cocaine in Suriname was in March this year, in the container port of Paramaribo.
