Prime Minister Mark Rutte will soon talk to BBB leader Caroline van der Plas. He says this to BNR in the prime minister’s weekly press conference. According to Rutte, the victory of the BoerBurgerBeweging in the provincial elections is ‘an unmistakable signal from the voter’. ‘We will have to do something with this signal, here in The Hague. Also in the cabinet.’

Rutte tried to make an appointment with Van der Plas by calling. “But she was partying then,” he told political reporter Sophie van Leeuwen. “She sent me a message later saying that we should schedule an appointment soon.” The Prime Minister would then like to ask her how she was able to achieve this success and how she views it. And then we’ll see what comes out of the conversation. According to Rutte, it is logical to enter into discussions with the party chairman of a major party in the Senate. ‘I want to congratulate her, and then it may just be that we start talking about a number of current political dossiers.’

Policy

Rutte thinks it is still too early to say exactly how the outcome of the elections will be shaped into policy. To say more about this, it is first necessary to wait and see which coalitions and boards of the Provincial Executive are formed in the provinces, he said. Rutte called it ‘logical’ that the BBB, as the largest party in every province, will play a ‘leading role’.

Rutte also did not say whether he is willing to let go of the hard target that nitrogen emissions must be halved by 2030. The prime minister said that Johan Remkes had already written in his nitrogen report that an interim evaluation should be carried out. According to him, the deadline has already become ‘semi-permeable’: not completely watertight.
