Shooting new Formula 1 film begins: 'This is going to be quite drastic'

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has announced that filming for the new Formula 1 film, which is about to start, will affect Grand Prix weekends. The film, in which Lewis Hamilton is present as producer and consultant, will start shooting in the coming weeks. Some of the action will be filmed over the Grand Prix weekends.

Actor Brad Pitt will play the lead role in the film and was already present at the United States Grand Prix last year to speak with the team bosses, among other things. If we are to believe the texts of Domenicali to the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com, we will see the American star even more often at the Grand Prix weekends in the coming period. After the Netflix series Drive to Survive has already generated many new fans, especially in the United States, Domenicali now also sees the new Formula 1 film as an ideal opportunity to give the sport some extra awareness.

“This is a new and different way to show what we want to do,” says Domenicali. “When we started working with Netflix, people started wondering if it was a good fit. Now we see its power. In addition, we have taken good care of social media and ensured that all drivers and teams are active in promoting the sport. This film is a new tool. Filming will start soon in Silverstone. This will be the first film to more or less take place during a racing event. That is quite drastic in terms of production. We need to control that, but it’s a new way to show that F1 never stops.”

Don’t rely solely on Drive to Survive

Greg Maffei, the big boss of Formula 1 owner Liberty Media, indicates that Formula 1 cannot continue to rely on the success of Drive to Survive forever. ‘The Simpsons has been around for twenty years, but other than that there aren’t many shows that have been running that long. Drive to Survive is great’, says Maffei. “However, we should not rely on Drive to Survive to remain our sole means of promotion. You must be refreshing. We have done this with TikTok and Instagram, among others. This movie, like Las Vegas, is going to be on a whole different level. As big as Drive to Survive is, I still meet people who don’t know it. Apparently the audience isn’t that big. A movie starring Brad Pitt, Lewis Hamilton, Bruckheimer and the director of Top Gun: Maverick, we’ve already seen a little bit of what they’re going to do and how they want to go about it with the cars. They take Top Gun’s technology for that. It’s going to be great,” Maffei recommends the new film.
