In the wilderness of Suriname, where she had to survive in ‘Real Girls In The Jungle’, Shanta Bakker only realized that we have it pretty good in the Netherlands. In ‘Grazia’: “In the jungle you didn’t have a tap with clean water. You couldn’t just wash your face, that was just bad for my skin. I really underestimated that beforehand. I thought it wasn’t too bad, that you could wash your hair in a stream with shampoo, but you had to carry it with you in your backpack.” Besides snakes and spiders, there were many monkeys in the jungle. Shanta and the other girls said they were in the territory of very large howler monkeys. “Then I was scared for a moment, because one of those monkeys tried to chase us away with its roar. It was the middle of the night, so you don’t sleep all night.”
