Schreuder reveals: “I tried to take him to Ajax in the summer”

Charles De Ketelaere exchanged Club Brugge for AC Milan last summer, but he cannot yet break pots in San Siro. Alfred Schreuder reveals that he tried to take the 22-year-old Red Devil to Ajax.

De Ketelaere was the big man at Club Brugge last season. Partly due to fourteen goals and seven assists from the shadow striker, Schreuder’s team was crowned Belgian champion. AC Milan decided to pay 32 million euros for the Belgian, who quickly ended up on the bench at the Rossoneri. He has been waiting for a goal for almost a year now.

La Gazzetta dello Sport labeled De Ketelaere as one of the biggest transfer flops in Serie A, but Schreuder stands up for his former pupil. “Was that a mistake by Milan? Not at all, De Ketelaere is a top player,” says Schreuder in the pink sports newspaper. “If he can adapt to the physical level of Serie A, he will improve a lot. But you usually need a year for that. Someone like David Neres also needed a period like that at Ajax, so it’s the same with Charles. The criticism? Yes… In the age of social media, everyone talks about everything. When I worked at FC Barcelona, people even criticized Lionel Messi after a few lesser games.”

Schreuder has full confidence in De Ketelaere, whom he calls ‘particularly professional’. “He reminds me a bit of Frenkie de Jong: an intelligent guy who sacrifices everything for football. He may look a bit shy, but he works and fights hard. He also hates losing, he is a real winner.”

According to Schreuder, De Ketelaere is at his best as a second striker. “He seems a bit slow, but he is quite fast on the field. I spoke to him at the beginning of the season, then he spoke about the big challenge that awaited him. I also tried to take him to Ajax in the summer take, but Charles only wanted to go to Milan,” said the coach.
