Sainz wants to end 2022 successfully: ‘Do you know that Verstappen will take the title’

Carlos Sainz hopes to score as many wins as possible in the remaining five races of the season. If Ferrari manages to win the upcoming race, the team may postpone Max Verstappen’s title party, but that is not necessarily the goal of the Italian racing stable. Sainz thinks victories will boost confidence within Ferrari, allowing the team to go into the new season with a better feeling.

Ferrari’s last victory dates back to July 10, when Charles Leclerc won the Austrian Grand Prix. Since that race, Red Bull Racing has continuously taken the victories and Verstappen is on the title track. Sainz hopes that Ferrari will have some success in the coming races. “We will do everything we can to win, which also slows down their success,” the Spaniard is quoted by Motorsport.com. “It’s been a while since we won, but the goal is to just win everything. With those victories we are preparing for 2023.’

“It is not specifically the intention to postpone his title win,” Sainz refers to Verstappen. “We know he’s going to get it.” Verstappen is assured of the title if he wins the race on Sunday and manages to set the fastest lap. Sainz, however, really wants to keep the Dutchman from a victory. “As Ferrari, we always want to win, keep learning and execute weekends perfectly. That creates self-confidence and that brings Ferrari more success.’

Sainz: ‘FIA rather too cautious than too risky’

The single race winner also briefly looks back at the delayed start in Singapore. “I think the FIA is more cautious than too risky. It is their responsibility to keep the show safe, while the responsibility of creating the show is back with Formula 1.” According to the Ferrari driver, the race could have started a little earlier. “Actually, the perfect time to go was when they gave the green light, but a 40-minute process slowed things down,” Sainz said.
