Sad news: Thijs Slegers passed away at the age of 46

Thijs Slegers passed away at the age of 46. Recently, the press secretary of the people of Eindhoven announced that he could no longer be helped with his illness. Before his death, his goal was to encourage people to donate stem cells.

PSV itself announced the sad news through the official channels. ‘It was with sadness that PSV took note of the death of colleague Thijs Slegers on Monday morning. He passed away after an unfair battle against his debilitating illness. He was 46 years old.’

Slegers was told in early 2023 that he could no longer be helped in the fight against his illness. The press chief of the people of Eindhoven received a wonderful tribute in various places, such as at Feyenoord in the match against PSV, but also in their own stadium during the match against FC Groningen.

In 2015, Slegers started at PSV as the new press secretary. Before that, he worked at various football media as a PSV watcher, the longest of which at Voetbal International. In 2020 he was told that he suffered from acute leukemia, but after a recovery process he remained combative and resumed his work in Eindhoven. Until three years later he heard that there was nothing doctors could do for him.

After Slegers was told that he could no longer be helped in the fight against his disease, he started recruiting new stem cell donors. This can help other people suffering from a form of blood cancer. Thanks to Slegers’ call, more than ten thousand people have registered to donate stem cells. This brought the total number of donors in the Netherlands to 400,000.
