Rotterdam – Emergency services deployed extensively on Saturday morning to help a 34-year-old man who had dived into the Kralingse Plas and did not want to get out. People were concerned about his health. That same afternoon, the emergency services had to respond again when the same man ran onto the highway via the railway. This created a life-threatening situation for him and fellow road users. He was tasered and was then arrested. We are now looking at what care Rotterdam residents need.

Bystanders reported on Saturday morning around 11:10 am that a man was exhibiting worrying behavior near the Kralingse Plas. Shortly afterwards the man jumped into the water and would not get out. Emergency services rushed to help and tried to get him out of the water. After about two hours it worked. The man was taken to hospital for a check-up.

That evening, around 8:45 p.m., officers were at the same hospital for another report, when they saw security guards having problems with a man who did not want to leave the hospital. The officers also spoke to the man and asked him to leave. When he still refused, the officers told him he had been arrested. The man protested against this. The taser the officers used had no effect.

The man ran off, jumped into a nearby ditch and swam to the nearby track. There he climbed out of the water and walked across the track. Train traffic was immediately stopped. However, the man walked along the railway onto the A20 highway, where there was still plenty of traffic and once again a life-threatening situation arose. The man was stopped and arrested with a taser. It turned out to be the same man as that morning. He was taken to a hospital again for a check-up. The highway was closed in both directions for a short time.

It is now being determined what care is appropriate for the man.
