Nino Wilkes (27) recently announced via Instagram that he likes men. In itself, of course, not a shocking announcement at all, were it not for the fact that the son of Rossana Kluivert grew up in a rather macho football world in which homosexuality is unfortunately still a taboo.
Nino says in Party: “My environment has known for years that I like men. But it was the first time I talked about it online, that I came out in front of everyone. The fact that there has been so much reaction to it, I think has to do with the link I made with professional football. I come from a world in which football is central.”
Rossana’s response
“I think that in this society you should not come out with news about your sexual orientation. But if Nino feels comfortable with that, if it makes him happy, then he should definitely do it. It’s his thing and of course I’m very proud of him. It is of course so bizarrely nonsensical and I cannot believe that this is still going on in 2023 at all. That you have to come out with something that is so incredibly normal. But yes, of course I travel a lot and then I see around me that it is still quite a thing here and there. I find that very strange. I think it’s almost too crazy for words that we still have to talk about someone’s orientation in this day and age. Because in my experience it is not an issue at all, zero. Anyway, Nino is just following his path himself and I support everything. As a mother I am just very proud of him.”
