RIP Google Glass: The gadget is dead, again

Google Glass was an invention that shook the world to its foundations. We had of course already seen in science fiction series that such technology could be devised, but that it actually existed and worked, that was a bridge too far for many. Or rather, that camera, which has ensured that Google Glass never got as big as it could have been. Anyone who thought that Google could still recover from this and could have come up with glasses in 2023 that were better accepted, is wrong. Google stops selling and developing Google Glass.

Google Glass

Google Glass came on the market in 2014, but sales were halted in 2015. People who did manage to get hold of one were labeled ‘glassholes’, which mainly had to do with two things. On the one hand, people thought it was a bit antisocial to put all kinds of things on those glasses while you were talking to them, on the other hand, people were not so happy that they were being filmed without their permission. Perhaps Google Glass was too early for its time (now you have Snapchat’s camera-equipped Spectacles and Facebook’s Ray Ban smart glasses that you never hear anyone complain about).

Still, there seemed to be hope for the glasses, because in 2017 Google decided to focus it more on a business audience. That seemed like a good stepping stone for a consumer version, but that turned out not to be quite right. Although, Google has lasted for six years, but now it really announces the end of this era On. If you own a Google Glass, it will be supported until September and then it’s done. Quite short on the grain, but at the same time you know with an invention like Google Glass that something like this can come into play.

Google doesn’t say much about it. It only reads: “Thank you for more than a decade of innovation and partnership. As of March 15, 2023, we will no longer be selling Glass Enterprise Edition. We will continue to support Glass Enterprise Edition until September 15, 2023.” You probably won’t be bothered by them, because you rarely see them in the Netherlands. Nor are they cheaper devices: Google Glass cost $ 1,500 when introduced in 2014. Knowing how often people lose or break their glasses, that’s a hefty sum.

Google Glass as hardware is therefore no longer. A tombstone can be made for that in the Google graveyard. But that does not mean that we have not benefited from this invention. Many options that you can find within the handy Google Lens app stem from Google Glass. So we prefer to look at it that way: Glass lives on in Lens. It may not be glasses that you put on, with Lens you also look through ‘a glass’ that gives you extra information about the object you are looking at. Google recently announced all kinds of new tricks for Google Lens, and it will continue to do so many times in the coming years, partly thanks to AI.
