Peter Windsor thinks that the victory in Brazil is at the root of Mercedes’ poor start to the season in 2023. The Briton thinks that a win in South America gave a distorted picture, because it was mainly Red Bull Racing that did not have its affairs in order, more than Mercedes had made progress. With this, the Austrian racing team has unknowingly thrown sand in the eyes of the Germans, Windsor thinks.
Windsor saw in the analysis on his YouTube channel that things are not looking good for Mercedes after the winter. “It looks very worrying for them. I said during the winter that in the weeks after Brazil it became clear that Red Bull made a big mess of that weekend. The correlation and ride height they predicted were completely off for the first time in the 2022 season, they were way too high, and they couldn’t help it because it was a sprint weekend.
The analyst already saw the problems at the German racing team coming, because he realized that it was mainly Red Bull’s problems that gave Mercedes victory in Brazil. “I mentioned during the winter that we shouldn’t get too excited about how relatively fast the Mercedes was in Brazil, because it was just a terrible weekend for Red Bull. That was proven in Abu Dhabi, and now again’, he refers to the big backlog that the former Silver Arrows have on the Austrians.
Sand in eyes at Mercedes
It therefore seems that Red Bull Racing has unknowingly thrown sand in Mercedes’ eyes with its bad weekend. “Mercedes probably went into the winter thinking they had it sorted out, and thought ‘let’s continue with the concept we have’, and see where they are. Let’s hope it gets better and they still have enough up their sleeves to move on, but it doesn’t look good for Mercedes,” Windsor concluded.
