Red and processed meat more expensive when health costs are included

If all health costs due to excessive consumption are included in the price, red meat should be € 7.50 per kg more expensive. Processed meat would then cost € 4.30 per kg more. Researchers from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and True Price calculated this on behalf of the Vegetarian Association and the True Animal Protein Price Coalition (TAPP Coalition).

Health costs

It is the first time in a Dutch study that the health costs of meat consumption have been translated into costs per kg of meat on the shop shelf. Excessive consumption of red and processed meat is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and colon cancer. The study looked at the medical costs of the diseases related to meat consumption. These costs, 1.1 billion euros per year, are now borne by society as a whole. The study calculated how much the selling price of meat would increase if these costs were included.

Environmental costs

Previously, the Vegetarian Association and the TAPP Coalition had research carried out into the costs of environmental impact per kg of meat. For this, the costs per kg averaged € 5.70 for beef and processed meat, € 4.50 for pork and € 2.00 for chicken. Added up, the environmental and health costs would lead to a higher kilo price of € 13.20 for beef and € 10.00 for processed meat. This is about double the current price of red and processed meat.
