Ralf Schumacher happy with tire test at Mercedes: 'Mick can put an exclamation mark like this'

Ralf Schumacher thinks Mick Schumacher’s tire test at Mercedes is a great opportunity to prove himself with the team. After the Spanish Grand Prix, the teams will stay in Barcelona for the Pirelli tire test, so Schumacher will be in action for the German team. His uncle thinks he can use the moment to show he’s quick.

The young German had to give up his seat to compatriot Nico Hülkenberg after the 2022 season. His performance at Haas was too erratic and in the end Schumacher’s umpteenth crash was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Not long after that he switched to Mercedes, where he is a test and reserve driver. He now mainly does simulator work for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and can be found in the Mercedes garage every race weekend.

It’s been a while since Schumacher has driven an F1 car, but Pirelli’s tire test has finally arrived. “This is going to be very important to him for two reasons,” said Schumacher, the brother of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, in his column at the German branch of Sky Sports. “He gets confirmation between the simulator work and the feeling in the car. Then he can show how fast he can be. Mick can put an exclamation mark in this way and show that what he can do in the simulator, he can also do on a track.’

Schumacher happy with opportunities for his nephew

The German likes that he is getting these opportunities at Mercedes after his difficult time at Haas. Schumacher has regularly indicated that he did not like how Haas, and Guenther Steiner in particular, treated his nephew. “I’m happy for Mick. He works a lot with the engineers in the simulator to make decisions about the development and set-up of the car,” explains Schumacher. So Hamilton and Russell have to trust him. If that works, it’s even better. Then he becomes an important part of the team and then he is treated as such. Mick helps decide which direction Mercedes will take with the car, so his feedback is very important to the team,” said Schumacher.
