PSV escapes unnecessary loss of points thanks to cannonball Simons

PSV escaped an expensive loss of points on Sunday evening. In its own Philips Stadium, the number two in the Eredivisie fought past Fortuna Sittard: 2-1. Xavi Simons became the match winner.

PSV fell behind as early as the fourth minute, after the public had had the chance to say goodbye to Noni Madueke, who had left for Chelsea. Paul Gladon worked a rebound acrobatically – with a disguised bicycle kick – behind goalkeeper Walter Benítez.

PSV woke up with a start and soon seemed to be level again, but Luuk de Jong was stopped by keeper Ivor Pandur. Moments later it was still a hit: De Jong headed in a cross from Jordan Teze at the far post. It was De Jong’s seventh goal in his last eight games.

But anyone who thought that PSV would go on and on was disappointed. The people of Eindhoven were sloppy and Fortuna Sittard did everything they could to disrupt the home team with time wasting and other provocations. That worked, until the 82nd minute. Xavi Simons claimed the ball, did not hesitate and found the top corner brilliantly.

After Simons’ beauty, the lead was no longer in danger, so that PSV only needs one more win to finish second behind champion Feyenoord and take the second Champions League ticket. SC Heerenveen and number four AZ are the last opponents of the season.
