Twitter must take ‘immediate action’ and ‘serious steps’ against threatening and violent tweets directed at MPs. This is what Speaker of the House of Representatives Vera Bergkamp writes in a letter to Twitter. ‘Twitter has an independent responsibility,’ Bergkamp told political reporter Mats Akkerman. ‘It was a pleasant neighbourhood, it will become a dangerous neighbourhood.’

She emphasizes that videos and photos with (death) threats are shared ‘and calls for violence and even murder’. These images are ‘probably punishable’ under Dutch law. She therefore expresses her great concern about these tweets to members of the House of Representatives. She points out Twitter’s responsibility to ensure security on the platform, she writes.

Call

‘I think it is important that members of the House of Representatives should be able to do their work in complete freedom and safety. That is part of a democratic constitutional state and I therefore think that Twitter should do more in this. Hence my appeal to Twitter: make sure there are fewer threats.’

According to Bergkamp, it is difficult to find out who is making threats, which is why she thinks it is important that Twitter takes responsibility and is helpful in finding out who is threatening. The President of the House says that he has been working on the subject for some time and that the Public Prosecution Service reported a few weeks ago that the number of threats against politicians is increasing.

She calls Twitter “a lot of fun” a few years ago. ‘You got ideas and feedback. It was a pleasant neighborhood and now it’s really becoming a very dangerous neighbourhood.’

A spokesman for Bergkamp emphasizes that it is about the general picture, and not about specific examples. PVV leader Geert Wilders, among others, recently shared Tweets with threats to his address, sometimes with very violent images. But politicians increasingly speak of (online) threats.

Twitter itself could not be reached for comment. Since the takeover by Elon Musk, the spokespersons have been cut back. Emails with questions are automatically answered with a turd emoji. That came in now too.
