Possible burglars seriously injured after crash and shooting (UPDATE)

Two people were seriously injured in Leeuwarden after their car left the road during a police chase. Their car crashed near Drachtsterplein in Leeuwarden. Police say the two occupants may have been involved in a burglary in a residential area in the east of the city earlier in the night.

The Hempens

The police received a report around 1:15 am about a burglary at Reintje Visser-Beardastrjitte, in Hempens. A victim was threatened with a weapon there.

The burglars fled in a car. Officers then came across a car that they thought may have belonged to the burglars. The car with two occupants was stopped, but took off. The police then gave chase.

Police shot during the chase. Moments later the vehicle left the road. The occupants were seriously injured and taken to hospital. These are two men aged 34 and 33 from Leeuwarden. Both men have been arrested.

Bandage

The police are investigating the connection between the burglary and the chase. The police are also investigating how exactly the occupants were injured: by police shots or as a result of the accident.

The National Criminal Investigation Department is also conducting an investigation, as it does after every incident in which officers use their service weapons.
