Limburg – Police chief Ingrid Schäfer-Poels resigns from her job as police chief of the Limburg Unit. She does this to fully focus on the medical treatments she is undergoing to fight the cancer that has come back. She will remain in office as police chief during the treatments. Her duties and activities are taken over by the other members of the unit leadership.

Ingrid Schäfer-Poels has already had to resign from her work in connection with cancer treatments. Inge Godthelp-Teunissen stepped in at the time as acting police chief of Limburg. After intensive treatment, Ingrid returned to her post as police chief in March 2022. Until the end of 2022, she and Inge fulfilled this role in Limburg. After Inge left for the National Unit, Ingrid remained police chief in Limburg. Recently it turned out that the cancer is back and that she has to undergo treatments again.

‘Last time it was already clear to me that combining the work as a police chief and the necessary treatments do not go together, which is why I am resigning my duties now. We are currently opting for a solution within the unit leadership that suits Limburg, namely ‘shared leadership’. My tasks and portfolios are taken over in full by the other members of the Limburg unit leadership. I have full confidence that my colleagues will constructively approach my tasks, activities and responsibilities together. I was able to make good agreements about this with the police in The Hague. Gerda van Leeuwen, my fellow police chief of the Zeeland-West Brabant Unit, has been appointed as a (legal) observer. The actual practical implementation lies with the Limburg unit leadership. It gives me the peace to once again enter the treatments combatively, “said police chief Ingrid Schäfer-Poels.
