Hulst – Police officers calmed down a number of riots in the night of Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 February 2023 and arrested three people. One of them was arrested for assault and destruction, the other two for insult. The three suspects spent the night in jail and are being questioned today.
Around 00.30 am they spoke to a 22-year-old man from Terneuzen in the Overdamstraat about his behavior. They told him and his two friends to leave the downtown area. The man responded by making a kind of mock fight movement towards one of the police officers. The trio then walked away in the direction of ‘s-Gravenhofplein. While walking away, the man found it necessary to curse the police officers. He was subsequently arrested for insulting an official in office.
Abuse, destruction and insult
Around 3:15 am, the police had to respond to a report of a fight in a catering establishment on the Grote Markt. There, a 21-year-old woman from Koewacht was allegedly assaulted by a man who was still in the catering facility. The man would also have smashed a window of the catering facility.
Many people were present on the terrace of the catering facility. That is why the policemen decided to form a line and clear the terrace, in order to create a working space for themselves. That did not go without a hit or a hit. A 29-year-old woman from Axel did not want to listen to the order of the officers to leave. She kept trying to reach the catering facility. She scolded officers and made striking movements. After she was told several times to leave and did not do so, she was arrested.
The suspect of the assault / vandalism could eventually also be arrested and taken away. It concerns a 32-year-old man from Stekene. In Torentijd it turned out that he was quite under the influence of alcohol (760 ug / l). The woman he allegedly hit was treated at the scene by paramedics.
