Groningen – On Thursday night, November 9, we received reports of two firearms incidents on the Grote Markt and later on the Akerkhof in Groningen. We are investigating and calling on witnesses to come forward to us.
We received a report around 11:30 PM that a firearm had been threatened at the Grote Markt in Groningen. Upon arrival we found four men who may have been involved in the incident. We suspected that one of the persons might have a weapon with him. When we wanted to arrest them, they did not follow the instructions of their colleagues and a potentially threatening situation arose. We then fired a warning shot. The four men were then arrested and taken to the police station. At the station it turned out that the men were not suspects in this incident and that they did not have a firearm with them. We interviewed the men as witnesses and they were subsequently sent away.
Around 11:45 PM we received a report that shots had been fired at the Akerkhof. Upon arrival, no suspect and no victim were found. As far as we know, no one was injured.
We are investigating both incidents. We have spoken to involved and possible witnesses. No arrest has been made so far. We are also investigating whether there is a connection between the two incidents. We are also looking for witnesses who saw or heard something around this time on the Grote Markt and/or the Akerkhof.
