NOS News

There was not a word of Spanish in between, last Friday when the report of the parliamentary inquiry into gas extraction in Groningen was presented. The system has failed and the people of Groningen are the victims. The State must change, was the message. But the same State is currently still conducting plenty of lawsuits against Groningen residents with earthquake damage.

In this podcast the story of the Dijkema family that has been involved in a legal battle for years. Administrators want to improve procedures, but at the same time they have set up administrative bodies that cannot do otherwise – says Wim Blanken, who assists the Dijkema family. He paints a picture of citizens who, despite all good intentions, are crushed in the system.

Heleen Ekker, who has been following the gas dossier for NOS for more than 10 years, explains how that is always the problem: the will is there, but in practice the legal settlement remains a gigantic problem that has not yet been solved.
