Pia Douwes taught herself to sing

can be seen again early next year in the musical ‘Elisabeth’, about the Austrian Empress Sissi. But before that happens, the play ‘Masterclass’ will premiere on May 2 at the DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam, in which Pia plays the role of opera star Maria Callas. To memorize all the texts, Pia called on someone to quiz her twice a week. “That’s the fastest. Otherwise it won’t work. There are so many monologues in it.” About what Pia has with Maria Callas, she explains in conversation with Party: “Maria Callas was not always seen as perfect, but that was precisely her strength. She sang with her soul and that is what she radiated. She really turned the opera world upside down by dealing with those texts and singing differently. Maria Callas was her emotion. I can relate. It’s the way I sing. I never really had any education, I’m a bit self-taught.”

It is important to know that the play ‘Masterclass’ is not about Pia singing Maria Callas. “As Maria Callas, I teach three people and you learn a lot about her life.”
