Pérez has not yet put the world title out of his mind: 'Max and I are well matched'

Sergio Pérez still believes he can take his first world title in Formula 1 this year. The Mexican threw away his chances of victory in qualifying last weekend in Monaco. On Sunday, the Red Bull Racing driver was also far from a points-winning position. Due to the disaster weekend in the principality, Pérez saw his gap to teammate and title competitor Max Verstappen increase to 39 points. However, the 33-year-old is not about to give up hope just yet.

“The speed is there and that is the most important thing,” Pérez is quoted by NU.nl. “If I had also been half a second to a full second behind after this crash, I would have been more worried. We have the speed to recover from this’, the Mexican refers to the disappointing race weekend in Monaco for him. “I watch it from weekend to weekend. So next Sunday I have to show the best of myself and make sure I win.’

Pérez sincerely believes that he can keep Verstappen from his third world title this year, because according to the Mexican, the difference between the two Red Bull drivers has been small all year. Max and I are evenly matched. Sometimes I’m better, sometimes a little worse. Max (Verstappen, ed.) is probably the toughest teammate you can have. He is the driver in form, but I firmly believe that I can beat him over a whole season,” the six-time Grand Prix winner is combative.

Pérez takes responsibility

Pérez has extensively analyzed his disastrous qualifying in Monaco and says that it went wrong due to several factors. “What I learned is that we should have just slowed down a bit with everything. It was a combination of things. We decided at the last minute to still set a timed lap and then an Alpine popped up in front of me. That surprised me. Next year in Q1 in Monaco we don’t have to make a last minute decision like that anymore. But the most important thing is of course that I should have responded better to that situation myself’, Pérez puts his hand in his own bosom.

The Mexican also felt guilty towards his team. It’s hard, but I just have to accept it. I have taken my responsibility and apologized to the team. It felt like I had let everyone down’, Pérez concludes his story.
