Özyakup about clash with Van Persie: ‘I will never talk to him again’

Oguzhan Özyakup speaks very warmly about Robin van Persie, but after a heated Turkish derby they broke contact for some time. The thirty-year-old midfielder looks back on the affair with the former top attacker.

“I see Van Persie as my big brother. He was and is my example,” Özyakup begins in the ESPN program Fresia & Milan parking the bus. “He also went to Arsenal from the Netherlands. He helped me a lot there. Even during the period when I was very close to the first team. I don’t think anyone else would help another person so much. He really has his best for done to me.”

The two met again years later in Turkey, although the Fortuna Sittard midfielder played for Besiktas and Van Persie chose Fenerbahçe. “Then I had to do everything for him, because I had been playing there for five years. I really hoped he would come to us, but it turned out like this,” said Özyakup. “We were together almost every day, but then we got into an argument on the pitch. So we haven’t spoken to each other for a while.”

The all-time top scorer of Orange celebrated, among other things, a goal in front of the 43-time Turkish international. “Everything happened beforehand. It started in the players’ tunnel. It was a really tough match. We always had a fight with Fenerbahçe. Red cards, you name it. At the start of the match I felt that they were talking about me I was tackled eight times in five minutes, and hard.”

“I was captain and talked to the referee. Then Robin came: you shouldn’t talk so much. It went up and down and when he scored he slid in front of me. Then I said: I’m never going to talk to him again,” said Özyakup , who eventually called to apologize. “I’m younger and shouldn’t have reacted like that. We talked it out.” Incidentally, they also briefly worked together as a player and striker trainer at Feyenoord.
