Twitter users will soon no longer be able to log in with so-called two-step verification via text message. This is logging in with a password, after which you must confirm the login attempt by means of a text message containing, for example, a code. This way of logging in remains possible for users who pay for Twitter, which leads to a lot of dissatisfaction on the social media platform.

Two-step verification, 2FA in short, via text message will be canceled on March 20, Twitter reports. Users who do not have a Twitter Blue subscription will have thirty days to disable this way of logging in. 2FA remains possible in two other ways, namely via an app or a physical security key.

Abuse

According to Twitter, phone number-based authentication is often abused. “While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately we’ve seen phone number-based 2FA used — and abused — by bad actors. Therefore, starting today, we will no longer allow accounts to sign up for the SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers,” Twitter said in a statement.

A Twitter account reported after the announcement that fake accounts were abusing SMS verification, which would cost Twitter $60 million a year. Twitter CEO Elon Musk seemed to confirm that tweet in a response. Many users on Twitter are outraged by the plans. Many of them find it inappropriate for the company to ask for money for security measures.
