Observant couple prevents fraud, police arrest three men

Tilburg – The police have arrested three men. That happened on Tuesday evening, March 19. They are suspected of trying to rob an elderly couple of their debit card. They did this by pretending to be a bank employee.

Around 5:30 p.m., the couple received a call from someone posing as a bank employee. There would be something wrong with the couple’s bank account. The person on the phone asked to put the debit card in an envelope and it would be picked up immediately. The man and woman immediately became suspicious and while one spoke to the scammer on the phone, the other called the police.

When the 21-year-old suspect rang the doorbell and entered the house around 7 p.m., an officer was waiting for him inside. The man fled the house and ran away. Police were also present around the house and the pursuit began immediately. An officer fired a warning shot, but that did not stop the suspect from running away.

In his escape, the suspect crossed an 80-kilometer road and jumped over a ditch. He hid some distance away on an industrial estate on Kraaivenstraat. Several police units cordoned off the area and a search was conducted with a police dog. The man was found in a container.

Another suspect, a 36-year-old man of no fixed abode, was immediately arrested in the neighborhood. A 22-year-old man was arrested at his home that same evening. Both are suspected of being involved. All three are still in custody.
